Home of Ki Purbo Asmoro, Gebang

On 16 May 2009 we had the 7th klenengan in the 8th fiscal year running. This served as a special occasion and opportunity for Pujangga Laras. A committee from the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland was in Solo, auditioning groups for possible inclusion in its Sept 2010 festival. Pujangga Laras had been contacted, along with the Mangkunegaran, ISI, and Garasi Benawa, to “audition” for the festival. The festival expressed their desire to have klenengan, dance, wayang, and komposisi at the festival.

Independently, the proposed dhalang from all four auditioning parties was Ki Purbo Asmoro, and it subsequently was determined the wayang portion would take place under the umbrella of Pujangga Laras rather than the ISI, Mangkunegaran, or Garasi Benawa auditions. At that point we decided to hold the audition at the home of Ki Purbo Asmoro in Gebang so that his wayang and kelir/debog set-up would be relatively simple.

The musicians gathered in the early evening and had a rehearsal, and they also had to wear kejawen, so we paid them significantly extra. We invited a limited number of players, one per instrument, yet they moved around during the free klenengan at the end.

And FYI, as of this writing we have heard nothing from the committee yet (as of Sept 2009!) and as far as we know none of the other auditioning parties has either.
