Year 8, #4

14 February 2009
ISI Surakarta

On Friday night, 14 February 2009, we had the 4th klenengan in the 8th fiscal year running. It was held in the pendhopo of ISI (Institut Seni Indonesia), as a kind of opening of the 2nd semester of the academic school year (classes start Monday).

We put this klenengan together in 23 hours, as there was a communication mishap and we thought it was being postponed when in fact everything was set and ready to go. But in fact, even more musicians came than usual, and the sindhen section was particularly full. Although the pendhopo was quite noisy with Saturday night street raucous, it was a beautiful atmosphere—breezy and open space.

Once again, Bp. Wito’s turn at organizing the gendhing was delayed since the klenengan was so last minute. Mas Wakidi decided on the gendhing and prepared notation for Maraseba, Miling, Irim2 koor, Ela2 Kalibeber, and Gandrung Mangunkung (the latter because we’re trying to put in a gendhing a month from mas Furqon’s list of gendhing never yet played). They didn’t get to Ela2 Kalibeber because Bp. Yadi felt they should play one more gendhing in manyura before moving pathet, and by the time they got to sanga there was only time for the Mulyararas. Another time…

We were happy to have two special kendhang player guests—Bp. Narto (kendhang player for Ki Manteb), and Bp. Darno (Banyumasan expert from ISI). Bp. Narto seemed especially nostalgic and touched to be there—his life normally consisting of night after night of rigorous wayang all over Java—no contact with old friend musicians and the more classic gendhing. He made a pact to start coming whenever Pak Manteb is not performing.

Bp. Wahyo is not feeling well and was unable to attend. He has been in and out of the hospital lately—nothing specific, but seems to be having trouble with dizziness.

MULYARARAS in remembrance of Bp. Panut Warsa Martono AND Bp. Slameta, both from Jagalan/Pucang Sawit, Solo

People have probably already read about Bp. Panut’s death—gerong and bawa singer in Pujangga Laras for seven years plus—on the gamelan list. He passed away last Sunday, 8 Feb, from lung problems. He was a neighborhood childhood friend of Pak Wakidjo/Wakiyo/Wakidi’s in the Jagalan/Pucang Sawit area of Solo, and a klenengan partner with their groups for over 50 years. Also frequently recorded on Lokananta and Kusuma.

Sadly, in that same week, a lesser known musician also passed away, also from the Jagalan/Pucang Sawit klenengan days of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Bp. Slameta was a kendhang and bonang player in the same group as the people above, and according to mas Wakidi a “very, very competent musician that we all cared about very much—most Solo alam musicians knew him.” He died a few days before Pak Panut. He was married to Ibu Mei, the one sister in the family of four—Wakidjo/Wakiyo/Mei/Wakidi.
