Klenengan Pujangga Laras

Dear Friends,

On Wednesday night, 30 April 2008, we had the 6th klenengan in the 7th fiscal year running. It was held at the home of Dr. Rahayu Supanggah in Benawa. It started at about 8:00 pm and lasted until 2:30 am. As is normal, there will be 11 klenengan in the year, with no klenengan in the fasting month (October this year).

This was the first klenengan in which we tried announcing ahead of time an official organizer for the 2-3 set gendhing. We handed the responsibility to Pak Panggah and he chose Jayaningsih, Pujangga Kingkin, and Lagu Dhempel. The rest of the gendhing were spontaneous.

A tragic event happened during this klenengan, which made this report very difficult for me to write. Our driver of 10 years, and one of our very closest and dearest friends in Java, (mas Joko Sambudiyanto) was killed by an 8th grade motorcyclist high on pills, while strolling down the street outside of Benawa. He had dropped us off at the klenengan, waited a bit to see if we needed anything, and then taken off with another driver for a stroll to get something at a nearby warung. He was rammed into from the back by the crazed driver and his body went flying five meters and he smashed into a drainage channel head first. The other driver he was with came back, got his own car, and drove mas Joko to the hosiptal WITHOUT TELLING US anything but that mas Joko had a few little scrapes that needed cleaning up, and that he’d be back in a bit. But in fact mas Joko was in a coma with serious brain injuries—bleeding and inflammation. We went to see him after the klenengan and were in desparate shock at his condition, tried to help him, but there was little we could do and he died the next day. So it was incredibly difficult for me to write this report, knowing now what was going on with him while we were laughing at Pak Mujiono’s drumming for jineman Uler Kambang……

Ibu Dharti, a member of Pujangga Laras since its inception, died on May 2nd after being in a coma, having had a stroke about a week ago.

It was though a very crowded and very active klenengan—many, many students there studying the players closely.

The next klenengan will be on Sunday night, 18 May, in Benawa and the gendhing will be set by Pak Wakidjo.

   Bp. Darsono ISI announced that we wanted to hold a mulyararas for Ibu Dharti, mbak Hendrati (Bp. Midiyanto’s wife who passed away in March), and our driver mas Joko. Mas Wakidi and I laughed, and tried to get his attention to say it wasn’t necessary for mas Joko (our reaction may even be audible on the recording)—he only had a few cuts and scrapes.
