Home of Bp. Mulyadi, Lojiwetan, Solo

Dear Friends,

Please remember to send in your July 2006-June 2007 pledge if you haven't done so yet! We're already almost half-way into the fiscal year, having completed 4 of 11 klenengan.

Last night, we had the 4th klenengan in the SIXTH fiscal year of Pujangga Laras at the home of Bp. Mulyadi in Lojiwetan. It started at 8:30 pm (our plane was late from Jakarta!)and went until 2 am. It was rainy and also a busy month for musicians, so there was a more minimal attendance this month, but the klenengan was very nice nonetheless. The musicians decided to have a klenengan with no planned gendhing, so everything was spontaneous this month.

Earlier in the day at 3:00 am, a highly revered dhalang Ki Naryocarito passed away of old age at the age of 80, and was buried at 2 in the afternoon. Two of his sons, Bp-s Pahang and Joko Sabar, have attended the kenengan absolutely regularly since its inception in July 2001, and even before then at the "malam Minggu Wage" klenengan that Anne Stebinger started in 1999. Another son, Bp. Ratno has come off and on as well, and one of Ki Naryocarito's sister-in-laws, Bu Rumyati and a daughter mbak Win have also come on occasion to listen, so he is definitely "family" to Pujangga Laras.

Ki Naryocarito was not only a highly respected dhalang, but also taught pedhalangan at STSI for 20 years. At midnight the Pujangga Laras musicians conducted a "mulyararas" in his honor. The lights were turned off and a gadhon version of Gambirsawit was performed in the dark, with everyone focusing their thoughts on Ki Naryocarito. We notified the family that this was to occur, and they joined in at midnight with their thoughts from their home in Windhan, Kartasura.

The next day we went over to Windhan to pay our respects, as we had been in Jakarta and missed the service. Mas Ratno asked us if Pujangga Laras would play for the 40-day commemoration of Ki Naryo's passing on Jan 2, but we will be in the USA and unable to organize it. So we promised to bring Pujangga Laras to Windhan for the 100-day commemoration on March 2.

**Javanese commemorate the passing of a relative with ceremonies on the 7th , 40th, and 100th days after the passing of a relative as well as the one year "pendhak pisan", two year "pendhak pindho", and 1000-day "nyewu" marks after the death.

Anyone knowing the family and wishing to pass on their respects to the family of Ki Naryocarito, an especially appropriate day would be on the 7th day after his passing, which falls on Thursday the 30th. Contact Anne Stebinger for an e-mail address for his daughter.
