Rumah Bp. Supanggah, Benawa

Dear Friends,

Last night we had the 8th klenengan in the 4th fiscal year of the "Laweyan" klenengan. This was our first klenengan since moving out of Laweyan. We will hold the klenengan for a few months at the home of Bp. Supanggah in Benawa, Palur, the site to which we have moved Carol Walker and Tim Buehrer's gamelan from Laweyan. Starting in June we will probably "keliling" a bit with the klenengan-hold it in a few different locations around Solo (places with gamelan instruments already there of course)-and then come back to Pak Panggah's for a few months, etc. Having the klenengan "keliling" will help keep the it a flexible entity, not tied to any one person's home, and will also give different communities around Solo a chance to experience the event.

We had one new musician-Bp. Teguh who is a karawitan professor at ISI-Yogya and close colleague of Bp. Saptono's.

The next klenengan will be held Friday, 22 April at Bp. Panggah's house in Benawa.

Budget

The expenses of the klenengan are constantly on the rise and this month was a big one. Almost every musician who has ever attended came, and there was a whole pack of listeners. This is one of the wonderful aspects to having the klenengan at Bp. Panggah's-many STSI students came to listen. There were over 100 in attendance last night-about 60 musicians and 40 listening. However this also adds to our catering costs, which had to go up from 800,000 to 1,000,000 this month. Nonetheless, the prices are still quite reasonable-Rp. 10,000 ($1.07) a head for unlimited snacks, a buffet-style rice dinner, non-stop tea refills, rental of all the dishes and silverware, and transport of the whole meal to Bp. Panggah's.

This month we spent Rp. 6.810.000 (or $734.00 with the rupiah at Rp.9273 = $1).
