Year 2, #2

Saturday, 17 August 2002
Laweyan, Solo

Dear Klenengan Friends,

The 2nd klenengan into the second year of the North American-sponsored klenengan took place last night in Laweyan, Solo, starting at 8:00 pm and running until 1:50 am. This klenengan fell right on Indonesian Independence night (17 August 1945). It's common practice for neighborhoods to have gamelan and wayang activities to celebrate Independence Day, but these activities tend to start on August 18th and run through August 31st, rather than happening right on the 17th, so we had full attendance.

(This was a real train wreck in the beginning. It seems some people, or someone, had agreed on Renyep Gendhing because Bp. Raji indicated "gong 2" to the bawa singer. But the bawa ended on middle 1 anyway and the musicians kind of floundered. There wasn't any rebaban to follow after the bawa, because the rebab player decided to switch rebabs right as the bawa was ending. The rebab then came in after 8 gatra with a very strong and clear cengkok low 2 for 2232 low, and from there people switched to Renyep GendhingÖÖ)
